The oval medal depicts the Virgin Mary with rays flowing from her outstretched hands, surrounded by the traditional Latin inscription “Regina sine labe originali concepta ora pro nobis” – “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us.” The date 1830 beneath refers to the year of the Marian apparition to Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris, from which the design of the Miraculous Medal originates.
The reverse is wonderfully detailed and rich in symbolism, featuring the traditional M intertwined with the Cross, representing Mary and Christ, together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, all encircled by twelve stars.
The medal measures approximately 22mm by 15mm and has a substantial weight of 3.2 grams. It is paired with a classic 20-inch 9ct Yellow Gold Curb Chain, weighing a further 2.6 grams, bringing the total necklace weight to an impressive 5.8 grams.
