Antique Gold Albert Chains

An Albert chain is a gold watch chain named after Prince Albert, made from the second half of the nineteenth century into the early twentieth. It was worn across a waistcoat with a pocket watch on one end and a fob or medal on the other, and a T-bar passing through a buttonhole to hold it in place.

Most are worn as a necklace, which suits the shorter examples particularly well, and heavier chains can be doubled for more presence. Longer ones can still be worn across a waistcoat as originally intended, or layered with other chains. The swivel makes it easy to add a fob, locket or medal.

The T-bar anchored the chain, slotting through a waistcoat buttonhole so the watch sat safely in one pocket and the fob in the other. Worn as a necklace it is decorative, hanging below the chain at the front. Many T-bars are removable, so the chain can be worn with or without it.

They vary far more than modern necklaces, because they were made for waistcoat wear rather than a standard neck length. Most fall somewhere between about 15 and 27 inches. Shorter chains sit close to the base of the neck, while longer examples fall to the chest or can be doubled.

They describe how the links are formed. Curb links are flattened and twisted so they lie flat, and are the most common on Albert chains. Belcher links are rounded and lighter in appearance. Trombone links are elongated ovals alternating with smaller connectors, giving a distinctive rhythm along the chain. The link type is noted in the item details where known.

Hallmarks are the guide, and on a well made Albert chain the individual links are often stamped as well as the swivel and T-bar, which is a good sign of quality. Not every antique chain is fully marked, particularly earlier or imported examples. Each listing states the carat and the weight in grams.
