Measuring an impressive 30 inches long and weighing 21.4 grams, this is a fabulous example of the long chains that were designed to be both decorative and wonderfully versatile. The generous length immediately gives it presence, while the pearls soften the gold beautifully and make it an incredibly wearable piece of antique jewellery.
Rather than a continuous gold chain, approximately 6mm pearls are individually spaced throughout the necklace, creating that gorgeous contrast between creamy white lustre and rich Yellow Gold. The gold sections have a lovely open, decorative construction which keeps the piece elegant rather than heavy, despite its substantial 30-inch length.
The chain features a traditional antique-style swivel fitting that is stamped 9ct, originally intended to allow a watch, fob or other treasured attachment to be clipped securely to the chain. Today it is exactly the sort of detail antique jewellery lovers look for – not only because it gives the piece character, but because it opens so many styling possibilities.
Based on its construction and traditional swivel fitting, we believe this piece likely dates from the late Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910, although as with many antique chains of this type, an exact year cannot be determined from the available marks alone.
At 30 inches, it falls beautifully when worn long and has that effortless, slightly decadent look that only a proper long guard chain can achieve. Wear it simply as it is and let the pearls do the talking, or use the swivel to add an antique fob, locket, seal, pendant or charm and completely change its personality.Questions?
