The medal has a striking openwork design, with a central blank shield-shaped cartouche surrounded by beautifully engraved floral and foliate decoration. The outer laurel-style leaves frame the medal perfectly, while the pierced sections give the piece a delicacy that contrasts beautifully with its substantial 7.7-gram weight. The blank central shield also offers the possibility of adding a personal engraving, if desired.
It measures approximately 35mm by 28mm, excluding the bail, making this is a generously sized antique medal with plenty of presence. It would look particularly fabulous suspended from an antique Albert chain, either worn centrally as a statement pendant or attached using a dog clip or bolt ring. Its size and elaborate shape also make it ideal for layering amongst other antique gold pendants and charms.
The medal is fully hallmarked for 9ct Gold, Birmingham 1898, alongside an A.B. Makers Mark for Waltham Watch Company. The crisp surviving hallmarks are a lovely feature and confirm its genuine late Victorian origins.
One of the most appealing things about this piece is the level of detail. From the engraved flowers and leaves to the sweeping openwork flourishes and beautifully defined central shield, there is something to admire from every angle. This is exactly the sort of antique medal that looks even better once worn, its intricate silhouette really comes alive against the skin or clothing.
