The design is fabulous. A smooth, highly polished shield sits proudly at the centre, framed by intricate scrolling decoration and a richly textured background. The contrasting finishes give the medal real depth, while the sweeping details across the top soften the traditional shield shape and make it particularly attractive as a piece of jewellery.
The centre has never been engraved, which is a lovely feature in itself. It leaves the original design beautifully clean, while also offering the opportunity for personalisation should its new owner wish to add initials, a date or something meaningful.
It measures approximately 28mm by 32mm, excluding the bail. This makes it is a great size, large enough to make an impact but still extremely wearable. Its 11.2-gram weight is particularly impressive for a medal of these dimensions and gives it a wonderfully luxurious feel.
Turn it over and you’ll find a much simpler reverse, together with the original British hallmarks. These identify the piece as 9ct Gold, assayed in Birmingham in 1918, with the J.W.T. Makers Mark for James Walter Tiptaft.
This would look fabulous on a chunky antique Albert chain. The generous weight means it has enough substance to hold its own against heavier links, while the shield silhouette gives it a strong, distinctive look. It could also be worn more simply on a traditional gold chain, allowing the medal itself to take centre stage.
