Its round form and elaborate detailing give this piece the appearance of a decorative antique pendant rather than simply a traditional medal. The centre features a wonderfully shaped blank cartouche, surrounded by an intricate border of engraved flowers, scrolling foliage and fine textural detailing. The combination of polished gold against the deeper hand-cut engraving gives the medal a lovely depth, with different elements catching the light as it moves. A scalloped border on one side adds yet another layer of decoration.
Unusually, the design is continued on both sides, making it attractive whichever way it happens to sit when worn. The central cartouche remains unengraved, leaving the original design beautifully clean while also offering the possibility of adding a monogram or personal inscription.
The medal measures approximately 25mm in diameter, excluding the bail, and weighs a substantial 8.8 grams. It carries a full set of Birmingham hallmarks for 1926, together with the Makers Mark G.F.B for George Frank Bickerton.
At almost a century old, this is a gorgeous example of early 20th-century gold craftsmanship. The floral engraving gives it a softer, more decorative feel than many medals of the period, making it especially easy to wear today. It would look fabulous worn alone on a fine gold chain, layered amongst other antique pendants, or hanging from an Albert chain.
