One side has been kept comparatively simple, with a polished finish framed by a fine engraved border that follows the outline of the cross. This cleaner side provides a wonderful contrast to the reverse, where the craftsmanship really comes into its own.

The reverse is beautifully hand engraved, with each of the four arms decorated with an intricate geometric and starburst pattern. The engraving catches the light wonderfully and gives the gold considerably more texture and depth. At the centre sits a raised circular cartouche which appears to be free from any obvious personal engraving, making the piece particularly appealing for its next owner.

It measures approximately 27mm by 27mm excluding the bail. The pendant takes the classic form of a Maltese Cross, with four broad arms creating a strong, beautifully balanced silhouette. At this size it has plenty of presence without being overly large, making it ideal for wearing individually or alongside other antique fobs and charms.

It carries a full set of British hallmarks for 9ct Gold, including the .375 fineness mark and Birmingham Assay Mark, together with the Makers Mark which appears to read CE&FD, associated with Constantine & Floyd Ltd. The date letter is slightly worn so we can’t identify the exact year, but we would place it in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

It has developed that wonderfully soft, mellow antique hue that works beautifully alongside both Rose and Yellow Gold. This makes it especially easy to incorporate into an existing antique jewellery collection.

A generously sized jump ring is included for ease of attachment, allowing the fob to be added straight onto an Albert chain, necklace or suitable bracelet.
