The medal has an elaborate pierced design with sweeping scrollwork and finely hand-engraved decoration throughout. At its centre sits a raised shield-shaped symbol, which has been left beautifully plain and provides the perfect space for personalisation. It could be engraved with initials, a date or a short monogram, although it is equally attractive left exactly as it is.

The surrounding gold work is particularly lovely, with an ornate almost heraldic appearance. The open sections give the piece a lightness despite its generous proportions, while the engraved borders and flourishes add wonderful texture when the gold catches the light. This is a far more decorative example than the simpler shield fobs we often see.

It measures approximately 37mm by 32mm excluding the bail making it a substantial size and it weighs a very respectable 9.7 grams. A jump ring is also included, making it particularly easy to attach to an Albert chain, necklace or bracelet.

The reverse carries a clear set of Birmingham hallmarks for 1915, together with the W.W.C Makers Mark for William Walter Cashmore, a Birmingham jeweller and silversmith whose work is frequently associated with well-made decorative pieces from this period.

With its 110-year history, substantial gold weight, crisp period decoration and identifiable Birmingham Maker, this is a wonderful piece of genuine antique jewellery. It’s decorative, wearable and full of character.
