Made in Birmingham in 1899 by Joseph Adelman, the medal takes the form of an elaborate four-pointed star, layered over a beautifully engraved wreath. Each point of the star has been decorated with crisp geometric engraving and tiny star motifs, while the surrounding leaves add texture and depth. At its centre sits a raised circular cartouche, which remains blank and ready for engraving if desired.

The reverse provides a lovely contrast to the decorative front and carries a particularly clear set of hallmarks: J.A. for Joseph Adelman, the 9 and .375 marks for 9ct Gold, the Birmingham anchor and the date letter for 1899.

Measuring approximately 31mm by 31mm, excluding the bail, it is a lovely size for wearing as a pendant or suspended from an antique Albert chain. Despite the intricate pierced design, it has a reassuring 5.7-gram weight, giving it a quality feel without being overly heavy.

What makes this medal stand out is its almost jewel-like symmetry. The combination of the star, wreath and fine hand engraving gives it plenty of Victorian character, yet the design still looks remarkably wearable more than 125 years later. It would look fantastic worn alone on a simple gold chain, but equally at home hanging from a substantial antique Albert.
