This is a gorgeous Antique 9ct Gold Shield Fob beautifully made by J W Tiptaft & Son Ltd of Birmingham.

The fob has a fabulous broad shield-shaped silhouette, measuring approximately 40mm by 31mm excluding the bail, so it has real presence when worn. Elaborate scrolling foliate engraving sweeps across the gold, complemented by pierced openwork towards the top and beautifully detailed borders. It is the sort of workmanship that immediately sets a good antique fob apart from its modern counterparts. At the centre is a raised blank shield cartouche, creating a lovely contrast against the intricately engraved surrounding gold. The absence of initials or a presentation inscription makes this example particularly appealing, retaining its versatility for its next owner.

Even better, both sides are beautifully decorated. The reverse features another plain shield surrounded by its own variation of scrolling and foliate engraving, meaning the fob looks fabulous whichever way it turns when suspended from a chain.

The J.W.T Makers Mark is associated with James Walter Tiptaft and J W Tiptaft & Son Ltd, a Birmingham firm founded in 1882. James Walter Tiptaft went into partnership with his son Norman in 1909, with the business becoming J W Tiptaft & Son Ltd from around 1918. Surviving examples show the company producing fob medals and other finely worked pieces during this period.

The fob has a wonderful mellow antique gold hue, rather than the brighter yellow of many modern pieces. This gives it tremendous versatility: the warmth of the gold allows it to sit beautifully alongside both antique rose gold and yellow gold, making it an excellent choice for accessorising an Albert chain or building a collection of antique fobs.

At 9.3 grams, this is a pleasingly substantial piece of antique gold, while its generous 40mm size ensures it won't disappear when worn on a heavier chain. A jump ring is included for ease of attachment, so it can be
