Date 1920! Shield Shaped Antique Medal by Constantine & Floyd (Higher Resolution Photos)
This is an exceptionally decorative Antique 9ct Gold Medal Fob made by the respected Birmingham Jewellery Manufacturers Constantine & Floyd Ltd.
The fob has a wonderful, elongated shield shape, finished with an elaborate openwork scrolling crest to the top. The front is especially impressive, with beautifully executed hand-engraved foliate and scroll decoration radiating around a central raised shield. The different textures and polished surfaces catch the light beautifully, giving the design a surprising amount of depth for such a compact piece. The reverse is more restrained but retains the decorative raised central shield and beautifully worked border, while also displaying the all-important British hallmarks.
The Maker is identified by the C.E & F.D mark. Constantine & Floyd were established Birmingham Manufacturing Jewellers, initially working from Caroline Street and later Regent Place. Surviving records show the firm produced a wide range of jewellery and small precious-metal wares, including gold rings, lockets, sovereign cases and fob medals. The company later traded as Constantine & Floyd Ltd and was eventually absorbed by H. Williamson Ltd in 1931.
It weighs 7.2 grams and measures approximately 27mm by 34mm, excluding the bail which gives it enough presence to be worn as a standalone pendant while still being perfectly proportioned for an antique Albert chain or collection of fobs.
This medal was hallmarked in 1920 and is now over a century old. More than 100 years of age has given it a wonderfully mellow antique hue, allowing it to sit beautifully alongside both antique Rose Gold and Yellow Gold. This makes it particularly easy to mix into an existing collection rather than having to match the gold colour precisely.
