A magnificent example of Victorian gold jewellery, this 9ct Yellow Gold Albert Chain dates to 1881 and is a particularly special find.
Weighing an impressive 43.1 grams, the chain measures 15.5 inches in length and features wonderfully substantial 6mm uniformed curb links. Each individual link is stamped, a lovely detail that reflects the quality of its construction and provides further evidence of its antique origins. The links have a beautifully smooth, polished finish, giving the chain a rich appearance and a satisfying weight when worn.
The traditional Albert design is completed by two antique dog clip fastenings, allowing the chain to be worn in different ways or used to suspend a pendant, fob or other treasured piece of jewellery. a substantial 38mm T-bar is suspended from the chain which features a rolling centre section that adds another interesting element to the design.
The hallmarks are another standout feature. The chain's stamps and markings indicate a date of 1881, placing it firmly within the Victorian period. The fittings carry the B & S Makers Mark, while the T-bar retains a clear Birmingham assay anchor, providing an important connection to the chain's British manufacturing history. These surviving marks are particularly appealing on a piece that has been worn and treasured for well over 140 years.
Finding a Victorian Albert chain with this combination of Yellow Gold, individually stamped links, double dog clips and a rolling T-bar is becoming increasingly difficult. This is a rare and wonderfully characterful survivor from the 19th Century, with the quality, craftsmanship and unmistakable presence that make original antique gold so desirable.
