Date 1926! Antique Medal with Engraving on Reverse by James Walter Tiptaft (Higher Resolution Photos)
A fabulous Antique 9ct Gold Medal Fob by J. W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd, fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1926.
The front is beautifully decorated, with a polished shield-shaped cartouche sitting proudly at the centre. It is surrounded by an intricate hand-engraved foliate design, enclosed by a decorative border and contrasting beautifully against the smoother outer rim. The combination of engraving, texture and polished gold gives the fob far more presence than its proportions might suggest.
The reverse provides a wonderful glimpse into the fob's history, engraved “C. & D.C.L. 1926 E.W.R.O.E.”. Rather than removing or disguising its past, we love these original inscriptions as they are part of what makes antique fobs so fascinating, connecting the piece directly to the person, club or event for which it was originally presented.
The Makers Mark J.W.T is a recognised mark of the Birmingham firm founded by James Walter Tiptaft, who established the business in 1882 and later went into partnership with his son Norman. The company became J. W. Tiptaft & Son Ltd and was particularly associated with medals, fobs and presentation pieces.
This is a particularly attractive circular example weighing 4.7 grams that measures approximately 25mm in diameter, excluding the bail. Over the last century, the gold has developed a gorgeous mellow antique hue. Its subtle warmth makes it especially easy to mix with both antique Rose and Yellow Gold, so there is no need to worry about achieving a perfect colour match when adding it to an older Albert chain or necklace.
A jump ring is included for ease of attachment, making it ready to wear from an antique Albert chain, belcher chain or charm necklace.
