A wonderfully decorative Medal Fob Pendant crafted from 9ct Gold.
The front is superbly detailed, with an unusual shaped outline surrounding a large blank shield cartouche at the centre. Intricate hand-engraved decoration fills the surrounding gold, including sweeping foliate motifs, delicate line work and floral details. The different engraved textures catch the light beautifully and give the medal far more presence than a simple plain shield.
The central cartouche has pleasingly been left blank, making this a very wearable antique piece today. It can be enjoyed completely as it is or, if desired, personalised with initials or a date to create a unique heirloom. Turn the medal over and its history is revealed. The reverse is engraved: “C.W.S. I.D.F.C. Winners 1930”. This original inscription gives the medal wonderful provenance and confirms that it was awarded shortly after its manufacture. Rather than detracting from the piece, we think this glimpse into its past is precisely what makes antique jewellery so special – this is a piece that has already lived a life for almost a century.
The medal is fully hallmarked for 9ct Gold, Chester 1929, alongside the C.W.S. Ltd Makers Mark for the Cooperative Wholesale Society Ltd. Chester-assayed Antique Gold is always lovely to find, particularly now that the Chester Assay Office has been closed for more than 60 years.
Measuring approximately 34mm by 25mm, excluding the bail, and weighing a substantial 5.8 grams, this is a really good-sized medal with plenty of presence when worn. Add it to a traditional antique Albert chain, wear it on a simple gold necklace, or layer it amongst other antique pendants and charms for a more individual look.
